Getting An Eye Exam

You vision is perhaps one of the most important aspects of your life. It is very important that you keep your eyes healthy, and that you have your eyes checked at least once a year. Many people have not had their eyes checked since they were in grade school. It is important that you have your eyes checked because they can change so slowly you may not even recognize the change. It is also possible for your eyes to change physically and hurt your vision. It can however be intimidating meeting with an optometrist, so here is what you can expect in your first visit with the optometrist like Dr Joel Zuckerbraun PC.

Symptoms

If you are going to the doctor for a specific reason, the doctor is going to sit down and talk with you in detail about what you have been experiencing. If you have been having problems with your eyes, be sure to be as detailed as possible. It can be difficult to remember all the symptoms that you have been having, so it is a good idea to write them down before you go to the doctor. If you are just simply having your eyes checked, you can talk to the optometrist to get to know him or her, and let them know that you are simply getting a checkup. 

Snellen Chart

You can expect the optometrist to get a general idea of how your vision is by having you look at a Snellen Chart. This is the chart that has letters and number big at the top to small at the bottom. You will be asked to read the chart with each individual eye, and then with both eyes open. Do not be surprised if you are asked to do this a few times at different distances from the chart, and do not be surprised if you are not as good at is as you thought you might have been.

Photos

You can expect the doctor to have you perform a few more exercises, but one of the most important aspects of the visit is going to come in the form of photos. The doctor is going to take close up pictures of your eyes. This allows the doctor to look for glaucoma and other major eye problems. The photos also make it possible to look at the muscles, the blood vessels, and other tissue within your eyes to check for any pressure built up.
